Where to start on my feelings for this book....

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was my own under the sea adventure. I loved that the premise was taken from the original Hans Christian Andersen version of Little Mermaid where mermaids turn to sea foam when they die. Although there were many detours from the original Danish story, I loved how Gadoury made it her own.

This book spoke to me on so many levels. The writing was fantastic. I felt every part of Lena's journey. I cried, I laughed, I was giddy with excitement, and in awe throughout this book. It was a perfect set up for the next book in the series. It was world building without being overly wordy and descriptive.

There were so many aspects that were almost subliminal messages. From the thinking that humans are all the same to the having to act like a proper lady, the messages in this book should be shouted far and wide.

"The best shells are found in the shallows," Lena advised, and he nodded.
"Alas, we'd sink quickly if we waded into the ocean, fully dressed. And good society demands that neither one of us part from our clothing or shoes. I, for one, should never see the delicate areas of your ankles."
Lena wrinkled her nose. "That's absurd," she blurted out.
Soren laughed. "It's civilized," he corrected her, "which I suppose is a word often synonymous with absurd. Even so."
As adorable as this passage is, it also shows how absurd society can be and Gadoury does a great job of showcasing that. As well as showing that just because you have been told one thing doesn't make it true. For instance, in the book the Merrows believe humans to be evil. However, Lena believes that just as all Merrows are different, so must be all humans. There are good and bad within ever species.

I truly cannot wait to see where this story goes in the next book.

5 out of 5
